Fellow Seibertron Twincast Podcast frontman Scotty P has acquired the Transformers Generations Platinum Edition One Shall Stand, One Shall Fall set available from Amazon and he took the Frustration Free package which saves you 20$. People were wondering what that packaging meant since Amazon showed that this new packaging meant you would only get the toys with no outer box:
However, for this set, you actually do get the coveted Platinum Edition window pane box with gorgeous new art. Scotty P took these photos to show you how the packaging looks like when you take the Frustration Free option for this set on Amazon:
He even gave us a quick written review of what to expect from this set and if it's worth getting or not:
ScottyP wrote:Yeah I really don't understand how that was "frustration free" packaging. Maybe for Amazon in regards to shipping it?
It's a pretty cool set. The deco on OP is nicer than I realized, the blue on the legs has a bit of a dark metallic sheen to it. The clear blue windows look bad, but from talking to Mark Weber at Botcon at least I know what the intention was there, with that being a representation of when he's got part of his abdominal area busted open during that battle.
The red Megatron is actually a neat take, and while I'm sure it's the only way legal would let the toy get out, the touches of yellow make this a fun way to pretend that Transmetal 2 Megatron and G1 Megatron had a child or did the fusion dance or something and out came this guy. This mold has held up extremely well, though I think this is only about the fourth version of it in a decade, yes? Anyway, it's very well put together. OP is surprisingly nice too, especially considering how floppy the AOE release was.
If you don't have these molds, this is a good way to experience them at a decent price point. They're not very definitive versions of Optimus or Megatron, but if you're like me and can live with that you won't be disappointed. I'm going to look at these as a "last shot" version of the molds. While they may not truly be as time progresses, if they are the last time these get brought out then it's a fun stylized way to go out.

a $100 box set up marked to $150 for platinum prices? I think that's a fair bit, a whole other leader class figure plus titanmaster

No way, I would never pay that much for repaints and some arms microns, it won't even include exclusive hands or feet

While this will be a Target Exclusive set in the states, it is already appearing online for whoever wants this set now at the standard Platinum Edition price of $93.99. It is currently available on e-bay by the same store selling the Exclusive LGEX figures.

Thats different, that isnt the US local release of the figure, thats the asian release . Its the same toys and box of course, but its imported by BBTS from Hong Kong, hence why it costs 10$ more.
Exclusive just means that only one distributor is getting local stock directly. And thats what the case is here. Only EE is getting stuff directly from hasbro USA and thus doesnt have to import and pass the costs onto americans.
BBTS Is an importer, it will always have items that are "exclusive" but at an extra cost.

While that does make sense, the price alone doesn't explain it, given that BBTS upped the price on the May Mayhem exclusives from the MSRP of $17.william-james88 wrote:Autobot N wrote:EE exclusive, my rear end.

It explains it greatly. You should know by now that BBTS does not just price according to their cost but according to the demand as well. Onslought was over 30$. And they new Groove was hot and that they would be one of the only ways to get him for now, so they charged higher. But here, they knew you could get these elesewhere for less so they dont charge more than this price, which is trying to be as competitive as possible, while still being 10$ more. And we saw that before. The Hasbro MP 10 reissue was in competition with the Takara reissue so they priced it very fair even if it was a Hong Kong import.
The price in both examples is about demand. And the demand is far higher for groove than for another platinum set of toys that could have been bought individually and easily available eslewhere.

They wanted to make it more toy accurate instead of toon accurate.

I feel they wanted to do something different and offer collectors another deco variation. These are apparently not planned by the Hasbro team we know (they are very distant from this line) so I figure its more from the Hasbro Asia side of things and since they are concsious of the collector mindset, they probably figured this would sell more than just rereleasing figures in decos people already have.

How close does Takara-Tomy's Transformers 2010 Anniversary edition of Unicron come in your estimation?

What didn't you like about the WtTF2010 version? Aside from the clear hand and some extra paint apps on the arms I thought he was pretty screen accurate. I preferred him far more than the dark and metallic Amazon version.
Given the release date Robotkingdom being the one to break the news I wonder if this will actually be a 2017 Year of the Rooster release? Can't imagine what colors they'd choose if that were the case.

That's...not a bad price. Based on inflation and time if honestly say that's an old price as long as he's not glowing green and translucent and suppose to invoke him about to explode

I dont know guys, the prices on Robot kingdom are usually the lowest and far lower than what they go for at retail. Platinum Optimus Primal was 119$ for instance and was released in the US for 150. I am saying that the price at US retail will be minimum 150$ for this toy. And its no use buying from Robot Kingdom to save (if you are in the US) because the shipping will come out to over 150$ anyways.

Excellent point, and it'll go with the other movie related Platinum sets.
Well, I look forward to hunting for his minicon at least. Platinums seems to be ironically hit and miss in regard to their paintjobs. Springer looks to be the best version yet, but they don't know how to draw flames, so both Hot Rod and Rodimus look bad. I wonder how Unicron will look - great or terrible. Either way I'm not sure I want to replace my Amazon Unicron.
Hopefully the box art will look like the toy. It's a small pet peeve, but I dislike it when the art doesn't match the toy and we've gotten a lot of that lately.

What exactly are you looking for in a Unicron color scheme? I was putting together thoughts and pics and stumbled on a post from Megatronus with pretty much all my thoughts. Both the 2010 and Amazon Unicron's have their merits as he points out:Seibertron wrote:And yet they still haven't done his colors right yet. Hopefully the 4th "special" edition is the charm!
megatronus wrote:I own both, and each has their own allure. This site actually has great galleries comparing them. Here's a prime shot:
The problem is that the movie uses a wide ranging palette of colors. I really think it's a matter of personal preference. Compare the above to each of these shots from the movie:
Some shots have more grey, others more blue. Also, the oranges vary. The two versions tease those differences out into two equally serviceable versions.
Once I have the space to do so, I plan on displaying both. 2010 Unicron in planet-mode, since the black wash on the round planet cover-pieces really pop and highlights the mold's details. Amazon Unicron in robot-mode, since I think that version meshes a bit better with my Classics/Generations toys.

Plus, it'd be a way for hasbro to cut even more costs, I'd think it'd be an easy choice for them to gouge even more money out of the mold

Inflation mixed with a collectors oriented market =\= price gouging.
Personally, it would have paid more if they released a more movie accurate version when they first released it. So yeah, I'll pay more now. Go ahead Hasbro. Charge what you need to do that you can keep making transformers I want to buy. Go ahead. I'm cool with it.
