Fellow Seibertronian notsoalex found Transformers SS 86 Ironhide at a Target in NY, for $33.99. We know there will also be a non exclusive Ratchet sharing this mold next year. For those wondering about the open box, this is the middle ground Hasbro seemed to find. Some fans would preffer a closed box to this, would you?

If you want more info on the packaging, it was discussed in depth at the latest round table discussion with Hasbro:

Q: Transformers boxes, can they go full closed box like other Hasbro lines?
A: Unlike Marvel and Star Wars, the Transformers brand skews younger, so seeing the robot inside does bring in more sales than a closed box with the image of the character. Transformers is not as character focused line like Marvel, it isn’t the character itself that sells the toys, it’s how the bot looks. There have been studies done and open windows are best for their target audience of 8 year olds seeing the robots on shelves. The leader class toys are higher priced and thus not likely an impulse purchase by parents, so they can look more like a toy aimed at collectors. Looking into all different boxing options, but right now open box for lower priced toys is the best for Transformers brand.

I guess I'll be checking Target tomorrow. I'm curious to see some comparison shots regarding height and bulk next to some other SS86 guys.

I'm pretty high on Siege Ironhide, but this might just replace him.

looks a little wee in that box. I hope TF doesn't start doing the fake deluxe thing like SW.

Seriously, that box and the window are way too big for a figure that small. If you sell a deluxe figure at voyager price, and justify it merely by “parts count”, you wind up with spectacles like this. They can’t disguise how dinky the figure is, stuffed into a box that’s obviously too large for it. People got the same sense of insult to the intelligence when opening the box for “leader” Blitzwing and seeing all the empty space. At least with Blitzwing, it was a closed box and Hasbro could fool customers more easily. It’s like buying a bag of chips and finding it half empty when you open it, having been “filled” with air. And the only compensation you get for the rip off is a disclaimer on the bag reading: “contents may have settled during shipping”.

Ironically, as popular as this Ironhide will no doubt be, I probably have a better chance of seeing him before ever see Sludge in a store due to all the Coronation Screamers' still clogging shelves. Who is Ironhides case mate? I assume it's 2 Ironhides and 1 "other". ( Possibly AoE Galvatron or BB Thundercracker whichever short packed in that last assortment), which BRW,I only saw for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Very interested to he how he stands next to ER Ironhide. He doesn't look much taller, but maybe a bit bulkier?

Nitrogen, Oxygen would cause the chips to rot in the bag.

Those who are genuinely serious when they complain about that grinds my gears. Not only the nitrogen is a conservative, it also prevent the chips to be utterly CRUSHED inside the bag. A simple fact too many people ignore or just can't think about.

Which is why I don't think chip bags and TF boxes are a good analogy.

Do you think all that space in Ironhide's box would prevent him getting crushed? Maybe if the box was sealed and pumped full of something that acts as a cushion against outside pressure.

What about cereal in a box? By coincidence I just opened a new box this morning. We usually pour the contents into hard plastic containers that keep it fresh, but no joke, the bag was half empty.

Most cereal boxes are flimsy. They would still get crushed if most things heavier than other cereal boxes get stacked on them. Though the box does provide a small measure of additional protection. Not much though.

What a wave! I really enjoy all these figures, I think they knocked them all out of the park!

2022 Wave 1.jpg

Galvatron may be my least favorite of the group, but it's not that I don't like it, I just like the others even more! The transformation is pretty cool, and the bot mode sculpt and proportions are very nicely done!

Sideways pulls off the design extremely well, I love how the arms work in bot mode with the spikes that stick out of the arms and the hands coming out of the tires, even with the buzzsaw blades in the tires! Alt mode is a pretty good recreation of an Audi without being licensed, and the gun from the Wii game is a great callback!

I will admit that I am strongly Bumblebiased, but DOTM Bumblebee is my favorite of the bunch! It's my favorite look for Bumblebee, and the amount of retooling they did is actually really impressive! The SS-49 mold was excellent as-is, but all the little changes for the DOTM model really elevate this figure!

Now bring on the next wave! Very excited to get them all in-hand and painted up!

The nitrogen thing, maybe. But the "air" itself functioning as "padding" to prevent the chips from becoming a fine paste should be obvious.

Cereal is typically more resilient than thin potato chips and the small pieces are more likely to shift when pressure is applied rather than just sit there and get crushed.

I agree that the wave was pretty good. I personally really liked Sideways, there were some awesome cues thrown into him. Thundercracker was also really good, I love the dark blue they used. Bee was solid, and that mold has been pretty good. Galvatron wasn't the best, but he's still OK.

I am stoked for Hot Rod, Crosshairs, and the Fallen. I have a very specific set of circumstances that might let me get Ironhide too if I find him at Target this week.

Padding and preservation may be factors. But so is deceptive marketing, and that can't be simply batted aside. In commercials, bags of product like chips are almost always depicted as being full to overflowing when you open them, practically bursting out in a torrent like the horn of plenty. Which is why the reality of a nearly half-empty bag is such a disappointment.

Pringles are protected by a can. Yet those STILL come with about 1/8 empty air when you open them, and many of the chips are still in crumbles. With bags, the chips still pool into the bottom, where some of the contents get crushed anyway. But to be fair - most chip bags also have another disclaimer that usually reads, 'Sold by weight, not volume'. However, Transformer packages don't seem to have a similar disclaimer that says, 'Figure is priced by part count, not actual size'. Maybe they should do something like that, if that's to be used as one of the justifications for price hikes.

So while the chip thing isn't a perfect analogy (what is?), it's still apt enough for what we're seeing with some of this Hasbro packaging gimmickry. Based on the photos, it's obvious Hasbro COULD have easily fit SS Voyager Ironhide into a deluxe container, and still had plenty of shipping protection. That's if they were really concerned about reducing package waste and 'saving the environment'. But they didn't, because they knew customers would be outraged paying $34 for a deluxe sized box. Whether puffing a chip bag with air to make it 'look' fuller; or putting a small toy in a large box to make buyers think they're getting more for their money, it's still an underhanded trick to mask inflation, and which doesn't really fool anybody.

The packaging of cereal and potato chips isn't misleading. The mass of the food inside the container is the part that's actually relevant to the person eating the food, not the volume, and the consumer can discern the mass from reading the label or simply picking up the package.

Heavy plastic 'toy surprises' or excessive iron could skew that, but the size of the bag/box not as much.

Kryten on Red Dwarf said it best - 'The first bite is with the eye.' An air-inflated bag will convey an impression that there's more in the bag than there actually is, regardless of what the net weight says in that little line at the bottom. But I already admitted: "most chip bags also have another disclaimer that usually reads, 'Sold by weight, not volume'.

But I added, "Transformer packages don't seem to have a similar disclaimer that says, 'Figure is priced by part count, not actual size". Or, some might add, by weight.

Heavy plastic 'toy surprises' or excessive iron could skew that, but the size of the bag/box not as much.

Packaging is in a weird state of flux now for action figures. Hasbro is dancing around, trying to find a standard that settles on a tolerable amount of customer dissatisfaction, while still serving the primary purposes of product shipping and protection. On the one hand, Hasbro is publicly stating they're getting rid of plastic windows 'to save the world from global warming' (or whatever). On the other hand, they're putting smaller toys into larger boxes, and thus perpetuating a level of wastage that runs contrary to their stated intentions. And also the whole 'open vs. closed' box thing which has its own points. On the one hand, an open box with no plastic barrier encourages theft and exposes the figure to potential damage/tampering. On the other hand with a completely closed box, you can't visually inspect the figure - so you can't confirm what you're buying until you open it. This forces persnickety collectors to ruin the 'mint condition/never been opened' resale potential because they have to break the factory seals to make sure they weren't the victims of toy swappers.

And also this issue, where the company either has to put deluxe size figures into voyager size boxes with an open window - and expose how much empty space is in the box. Or put the figure in a closed box, and risk all the other issues listed above. All sides of the debate seem to have their own points to make, and their territory staked out. Knowing the marketing/retail industry as I do, I know that manipulating perception is a strong factor in sales, and packaging is a part of that.

Priming can have a powerful impact on minor decisions or decisions made under a time pressure or high cognitive load, but has less impact the more central route processing is engaged. Exploiting it as a marketing technique depends on the product being overall cheap, necessary (if I don't buy this food I still have to buy SOME food), and trivial - under those conditions, using a larger box or bag than your competition can give you enough of an edge to reap a financial benefit.

If someone is thinking so little about their decision to buy a $33.00 toy, however, they probably don't care at all about what's in the box - they're probably sold by the fact that the price point meets some social obligation.

Also, I don't understand why you think there needs to be some disclaimer justifying the price. The price of an end product (as opposed to raw material) is based on a long list of things including the subjective value of the intellectual property and the artistry of the sculpting and engineering. I mean, it really flabbergasts me that anyone would suggest this as something other than a joke. Should we also have disclaimers on cars and cell phones noting that they are not priced by weight? How are you planning to use the product such that weight is your primary gauge for its value relative to a competing product? Doorstop? Blunt weapon?

With the recent leak of Studio Series Hatchet, I had to get the rest of the Dreads painted up! If you're wondering about the number of dreads on Crowbar, he has 6 in the movie (though 2 of them are severed when he crashes into Ironhide, bringing him to 4), while the figure has 9. I gave him a haircut and brought him to 6!

I am curious what all the holes on the roof are for, some of them look to be in the place that Bee's shoulder rocket launchers would go? Bee doesn't use them in robot mode in DOTM, but it'd be cool if they included them with Bee anyway!

Supposedly it's for weapons that will come with the Bee version.

I do wonder if a future Bee version will have the hood top Gatling guns.

I suppose so too that there will be a "stealth mode Bee light edition", but this gives Laserbeak-the-pink-Bee the short end of the stick. :(

Cheers for the upload! Another great review from a legit, "grass roots" TF reviewers and YouTuber!

I've got the original Japanese repaint, so I wonder which one has the most authentic shade of pink to the film version? Also, which mold is "better" for this character? Is it worth double-dipping?

I got the Fallen in tonight. There will be more of him coming this week, but first impression is: he is pretty dang neat. They gave him a great glowup

He sent it by email with just an image. However, I also know that these have popped up in Virginia.

I finally got sludge. Holy crap is he a piece of crap. Legs are so wobbly. Pieces just fall off. Be ashamed hasbro. Instructions are wrong, I had to youtube a video to figure out the transformation. If I had my receipt, he'd be going back.
